An unidentified person opened fire at the car of Vitalii Zhuravlov, the deputy mayor and the deputy head of the Nikopol city council, in the city of Nikopol, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
The incident took place near Zhuravlov's house.
One of the main lines of enquiry is a conflict with a local group that has been going on since 2017.
On February 8, at about 9 a.m., the police received a report that an unknown person had shot at a car belonging to the deputy mayor of Nikopol. At the scene, the police found that the attacker had used unidentified arms, as a result of which the car caught fire. After the fire was extinguished, the body of a 59-year-old man was found inside the car.
A deputy mayor of Nikopol in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast was shot to death in his car on Feb. 8 by unknown perpetrators, the Prosecutor General's Office reported.
The attack also set the vehicle on fire, which was later extinguished by first responders.
The Ukrainian outlet New Voice said that the victim was Vitalii Zhuravlov, a member of Yuliia Tymoshenko's Batkivshchyna (Fatherland) party, who became Nikopol's deputy mayor in September 2021.
Russian infantry is banned from using armored vehicles to attack the Dnipro bridgehead.
Serhii Lysak, head of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration, stated that Russian attacks caused damage to infrastructure and housing in Nikopol.
