On the Kupiansk front, the Ukrainian Defence Forces repelled two Russian attacks near the settlement of Synkivka in Kharkiv Oblast.
Two Russian missile strikes late on Jan. 16 in Kharkiv injured 17 people and damaged a multi-story building, with explosions reported at around 9:40 p.m. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said missiles hit the center of the city where there is no military infrastructure and where there are residential buildings.
Both Russian and Ukrainian sources reported that battles have dragged on northeast of Kupyansk near Synkivka; east of Kupyansk near Petropavlivka; northwest of Kreminna near Makiivka and Ploshchanka; and west of Kreminna near Terny, Torske, and Yampolivka.
